First Gray Wolves*
Of course, not in the whole history of Gray Wolves. The first wolves to roam Yellowstone since the early 1900s. The first wolves were brought in 1994. The scientists who found one of the wolves knew they found something special when they tranquilized and captured Number Nine, (seen below) a magnificent black female alpha wolf.
Number Nine
The beautiful black alpha female Number Nine was captured in 1994. She was about four years old, and she was in heat-ready to mate. She was brought in along with her daughter, Number Seven, and put in a cage, where they supervised and studied her.
The scientists were ready to have pups. They tranquilized and captured a beautiful silver alpha male which they called Number Ten.
Number Ten
The magnificent alpha male later was put in with Number Nine. He was about five years and ready to mate.
The scientists hoped for a marriage between Nine and Ten, but they also feared a fight. But, to their relief, soon the pair were eating together, howling together, and mating. The scientists eventually put a tracking collar on the wolves, and released them, their collars letting the scientists know their location. The collars began beeping faster if the wolf did not move for three hours.
Occuring later, Number Ten was slain for his fur by a local human. Number Nine gave birth to a wonderful litter of healthy pups, which were released along with their mother. They were the first Gray wolves to be re-introduced to Yellowstone National Park.
