Dispersal (Lone) Wolves
Some wolves do not remain in their pack for life. The reason for this is unsure of, but inferences have been made of the cause of wolves to disperse themselves from the pack. Though it may seem logical for omega wolves to stray from their pack because they are usually a target of abuse and are least privileged, this isn't usually the cause. Wolves usually prefer to remain in their pack because they, no matter what their rank is, stay with their pack for protection and meals.
Causes and Effects
Like stated before, there is no sure reason of why wolves disperse themselves from the pack. Wolves typically become adults around 1-2 years of age, and almost every wolf has a strong urge to mate once they become mature. Since wolves of lower ranks don't usually have the chance to mate, they may stray from the pack to find another dispersal wolf to mate with. Or, a wolf may be exiled from their pack for certain reasons such as refusing to obey the laws of the pack. Wolves who do stray from their pack don't stay near other packs. They must find a way to survive on their own. Typically, a wolf doesn't stay dispersal for long, either by choice, disease, or by death from the inability to survive on their individual skills.
Lone wolves are often heard howling. The most likely reason for this is the wolf is howling to find his pack. The wolf will howl and wait for a reply from another pack. The pack will decide whether to let him in or drive him out.
